Jersey City Just Got an 85,000 Square Foot ShopRite Inside a 60 Story Tower
Jersey City's grocery game just leveled up in the most Jersey City way possible: vertically.
The ShopRite of Hudson Exchange Place opened Wednesday, October 14 at 7 AM, with a ribbon cutting at 9, on the second floor of Everton, a brand new 60 story residential tower at 99 Provost Street. Read that again slowly. This is an 85,000 square foot supermarket, one of the biggest grocery stores to open in New Jersey this year, sitting inside a residential skyscraper. You reach it by escalator or elevator from street level, straight from the parking garage, or, for the people who live in the tower, basically by coming downstairs. Grocery shopping as an amenity, built into the building.
The new store replaces the ShopRite at Metro Plaza, 400 Marin Boulevard, which closed for good on October 13 at 6 PM. The two stores sit right across the parking lot from each other, so this was a move of a few hundred feet that took several years to pull off. And it is not a lateral move. The Hudson Exchange Place store is 20,000 square feet larger than the Metro Plaza location it replaces. Bigger store, taller building, same neighborhood, completely different era.
Inside, the Inserra family is running its full playbook. Inserra Supermarkets, family owned and based in Mahwah, operates 24 ShopRite stores across New Jersey and New York as part of the Wakefern cooperative, plus Price Rite and Fresh Grocer locations. The Jersey City store brings the Inserra favorites with it: Patsy's Butcher Shop, and Antoinette's Kitchen, which serves freshly prepared meals with a hot bar and a soup bar. CEO Lawrence Inserra Jr. framed the opening as a homecoming of sorts, welcoming customers to their new home at 99 Provost Street and promising a greater selection of fresh foods, prepared meals, and convenient services in a beautiful, modern, expanded space.
The store is open 7 AM to 11 PM daily, and the opening celebration is still running. Tasting stations are set up from 7 AM to 2 PM through Sunday, October 18, and yes, there is a Singing Mozzarella Chef appearing on October 17 and 18. Only in Jersey City does a supermarket opening come with live mozzarella entertainment.
Zoom out for a second, because this opening lands in the middle of the wildest grocery month New Jersey has had in years. Two weeks ago we covered Kings Food Markets letting leases lapse in Hillsdale and Whitehouse Station. Last week it was Trader Joe's planting two more flags in West Orange and Jersey City. Inserra also just opened the Edgewater ShopRite on September 19. The pattern is not subtle. The old guard is shrinking where the leases are weak, and the strong regional operators are building bigger, newer, and taller where the people actually are.
For downtown Jersey City, the math is simple. Thousands of residents in the Exchange Place and waterfront towers now have a full size, full service supermarket inside their own building or a short walk away, replacing an aging store that had been outgrown by the neighborhood around it. That is what grocery news looks like when a city is winning.
The ShopRite of Hudson Exchange Place is open now at 99 Provost St, Jersey City, second floor, 7 AM to 11 PM daily.
