Marlton is about to watch one donut story end and another one begin in the exact same storefront. Federal Donuts & Chicken, at 300 Route 73 South, Suite 130 in Marlton Square, serves its last day on Saturday, October 31. Halloween is the final call for the Philadelphia born brand's first New Jersey location, and if you have been meaning to make the trip, this weekend is the trip. There is no soft close and no extra week. Saturday is it.
The run was a short one. Federal Donuts opened in Marlton in April 2025, which puts the whole New Jersey experiment at about 18 months. When it arrived, it carried real weight. This was not a random donut shop leasing space on Route 73. It was the first Garden State outpost of a brand that helped define modern donut culture in Philadelphia, and Marlton got it before anywhere else in the state.
For anyone who never made it in, the concept was simple and very specific. Federal Donuts built its name on fancy donuts, hot fresh donuts made to order, hand battered twice fried chicken, and coffee to wash it all down. The fancy side rotated through glazes and toppings. The hot fresh side came out warm, rolled in flavored sugars. The chicken was the savory anchor that turned a donut run into an actual meal. It was a small menu done with intent, and that intent came straight from the top.
The founders explain the pedigree. Federal Donuts started in Philadelphia in 2011, created by James Beard Award winning restaurateurs Michael Solomonov and Steve Cook. These are operators who built serious restaurants, and they treated donuts and fried chicken with the same seriousness. That approach took the brand a long way. At its peak, Federal Donuts grew to 10 or more locations. The Marlton closure tells the other side of that story. After several closures back home in Philadelphia and now this one in New Jersey, the brand is down to four total locations.
There is one important exception for New Jersey fans. The Federal Donuts location in Atlantic City, inside Hard Rock, opened just a few months ago and remains open. So Saturday does not end the brand in this state entirely. It ends it in Marlton, and it ends the suburban, everyday, drive up and grab a box version of it. After this weekend, getting your Federal Donuts fix in New Jersey means a trip to Atlantic City.
Now for the part that turns a closing into a genuine headline. The space is not staying empty, and the replacement is confirmed. A Randy's Donuts representative directly confirmed to South Jersey Food Scene on Thursday that Randy's Donuts will take over the Federal Donuts space in Marlton. That confirmation matters, because the Randy's name had been floating around as speculation. It is speculation no longer. The deal is real, straight from the brand itself.
And it is a big deal well beyond Marlton. Randy's Donuts is the iconic Los Angeles donut brand, a name that carries decades of West Coast donut history. Marlton will be its first location on the East Coast. Out of every market on this side of the country, the first East Coast Randy's lands on Route 73 in Burlington County.
What nobody can tell you yet is the date. Randy's has announced no opening timeline for Marlton, and anyone putting a month on it right now is guessing. A takeover like this means new signage, a new interior, new equipment and a full brand conversion of a space built for a different donut operation. The honest answer is that the timeline will come from Randy's when Randy's is ready. Until then, the confirmed facts are the ones that count: the space, the brand, and the first East Coast title.
So the practical play for this weekend is clear. If Federal Donuts ever meant something to you, or if it sat on your list of places you kept driving past on Route 73, Saturday, October 31 is your last chance at 300 Route 73 South in Marlton. Go get the hot fresh donuts while they are still coming out of that kitchen. Then keep an eye on that same storefront, because the next name going up on it is bringing Los Angeles donut history to South Jersey, and Marlton is about to be first in line.
